Online Games for the Family

Kids love computers and will spend far too long playing games if they can get away with it. Some of the games are educational and the children can actually learn something while they are having fun. Many parents who are trying to keeps tabs on what their children are doing will source some online games for the family so that they can all play together. We have looked at a game called “Qwirkle” which is suitable for all age groups.

Quirkle is a sort of cross between Scrabble and claim free credit Dominoes, but the tiles have coloured shapes rather than dots or letters. These tiles are the main feature of the game and fill the board and although you do not have to spell words there are rules as to where you can put the tiles.

The tiles are made in six colours – purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. Also there are six shapes, flower, square, circle, sunburst, star and diamond. These can form about six combinations of which there are three of each.

To start the game you are allowed five tiles which can be displayed in front of you as you would do with dominoes. Now here come another similarity to dominoes; when you place a tile it can match the same colour but different shape, or it can match the same shape and a different colour. There is a point to be score for every tile you put down on the board and for the other tiles in the same column or row.

You can score double points if you make a Quirkle. What is a Quirkle? It is when you get a column or a row that contains all six possible shape and colour combinations. In is possible to score your points from more than one column or row within one turn.

Each time you put a tile down you must take another until the bag is empty, then you carry on playing until you have used all your tiles. When all the tiles are used, total your score and the player with the highest score is the winner.

This is a great family game because it is easy even for young children to learn the rules. It is also a gentle game so there is opportunity to chat whilst you are playing.
